Aquitaine is a region full of life. As such events are plenty and very interesting. The leader in the “most annual events” category is of course the prefecture of the region, Bordeaux. This however does not mean that other cities, towns or villages in the region don’t fair up to the task.

 

• Festival of the Fairy Tale

Info: This animated cultural Festival du Conte in St Michel celebrates the written and spoken word, in particular the world of the fairy tale. The town is brought to life with street performances, shows, exhibitions and installations.

• Paths of Imagination

Info: The historic Old Town in Terrasson is filled with performers, fireworks and exciting happenings during the annual summer street festival, Les Chemins de L’Imaginaire.

• International Showjumping Festival

Info: Jumping International features four days of international eventing and entertainment on a horsy theme in the Aquitaine town of Blaye.

• French Landaise-Fighting Championships

Info: Unlike the Spanish corridas, the French Landaise-fighting championship uses only the female cow, and features the overpowering of the animal, but not her death. This annual competition is held in Mont de Marsan, in the Landes department.

• Liars’ Festival

Info: There’s proof of the Gascon gift of the gab at this annual yarn-spinning festival in Moncrabeau: the biggest liar walks away with the crown.

• Beer Festival

Info: For one weekend in August, sleepy Saint Léon d’Issigeac in Bergerac presents a lively beer festival, offering locally-produced and artisanal beers and regional food in a convivial atmosphere.
